When a girl is left alone with no one around, she has to work harder for her basic necessities. The novel Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens illustrates the same scenario with an interesting plot.

In 1952, Catherine Clark, nicknamed as Kya lived with her Ma, Pa, and four siblings in North Carolina Marsh. She stayed happy until she saw her mother abandon her because of her Pa’s drinking habit. This later led her siblings too abandon leaving her alone with Pa. As no one was left with Kya, Pa stopped drinking and engaged himself with Kya. Everything went properly until one fine Kya finds a letter and keeps in on table considering it to be a letter for Pa. Pa reads it and becomes furious which makes him addictive to drinks again. Moreover, he starts going for frequent trips to gamble. When he didn’t return, Kya considers him as dead and works independently for fulfilling her basic necessities.

Later Kya starts facing prejudices from people who described her as filthy and nasty. However she gets a friend named Tate who used to fish in marsh. He teaches her how to read and write. Slowly they form a romantic relationship which ends up temporarily as Tate goes for his studies to college.

In 1965, Kya meets Chase and they both become close to each other which leads them to form a romantic relationship. Chase is as such a suspicious person but keeping everything aside, they both make love in cheap motel room. Once Chase shows her a fire tower where he was found dead later. Kya, unknown about Chase regrets for been close with him after she reads about his engagement with another girl in a newspaper and breaks the relationship. As suspicions on murder turns towards Kya she gets arrested. So what happens next? Does she get convicted or acquitted? What’s the link between the two stories of 1952 and 1965?
